Chapter 1: Force (బలం)
1. Introduction to Force
We observe many changes around us like changes in seasons, sun rise and sun set, and tides. In ancient days, people believed an invisible force was responsible. Later, force was defined through our physical efforts and actions like pushing and pulling.
2. Push and Pull Actions
Actions like stretching a rubber band, pulling a rickshaw, rowing a boat, picking, squeezing, twisting, lowering, and lifting cause a change in the state or shape of an object.
3. Types of Forces: Contact Forces & Field Forces
Forces are classified into contact forces (direct physical contact like muscular force, friction, normal force, tension) and field forces / forces at a distance (no physical contact like magnetic force, electrostatic force, gravitational force).
4. Net Force and Free Body Diagram (FBD)
When multiple forces act simultaneously on a body, their combined effect is represented by the net force ($F_{net}$). A Free Body Diagram (FBD) illustrates all forces acting on an object at a given instant.
5. Pressure
The force acting perpendicularly on a unit area of a surface is called pressure. $\text{Pressure} = \frac{\text{Force}}{\text{Area}}$. Its SI unit is Newton/meter squared ($\text{N/m}^2$).

Chapter 1: Complete "Improve Your Learning" Exercises & Solutions
Reflections on Concepts
1. What is a force? What changes can be produced by a force? (AS1)
Answer: A force is a push or a pull acting on an object. Changes produced by a force include: changing the state of rest or motion, changing speed, changing direction, and changing the shape temporarily or permanently.
2. Give two examples each for a contact force and a force at a distance. (AS1)
Answer:
1. Contact Forces: Muscular force (lifting a bucket), Frictional force (walking on a floor).
2. Forces at a distance: Magnetic force (attracting iron nails), Gravitational force (apple falling down).
3. Explain Gravitational Force by giving a suitable example. (AS1)
Answer: Gravitational force is the attractive force that exists between any two masses (or bodies) in the universe. Since the earth is massive, it pulls objects toward itself. Example: When a pen slips from our hand, it falls down to the floor due to Earth's gravitational pull.
4. Draw and explain a free body diagram (FBD) to show all the forces acting on a car. (AS5)
Answer: When a car moves with non-uniform speed along a road, the forces acting on it are: 1. Forward force applied by the engine ($F$). 2. Frictional force applied by the road ($f$). 3. Normal forces ($N_1$ and $N_2$). 4. Downward gravitational force / weight ($W$). Net force along x-axis: $F_{net,x} = f - F$; Net force along y-axis: $F_{net,y} = N_1 + N_2 - W$.
5. Why do tools meant for cutting always have sharp edges? (AS1)
Answer: Cutting tools have sharp edges to have a very small area of contact. According to the pressure formula ($\text{Pressure} = \frac{\text{Force}}{\text{Area}}$), for a given force, a smaller surface area produces greater pressure, making cutting much easier.
Application of Concepts
1. How can you differentiate between a contact force and a force at a distance? (AS1)
Answer:
- Contact Force: Requires direct physical contact or interaction between two objects (e.g., pushing a table, muscular force).
- Force at a distance (Field Force): Acts without any physical contact between objects through a field (e.g., magnetic attraction, gravity).
2. Find the net forces from the given diagrams (Textbook diagrams a, b, c, d). (AS4)
Answer:
- When forces act in the same direction, they are added ($F_{net} = F_1 + F_2$).
- When forces act in opposite directions along a straight line, the net force is their difference ($F_{net} = F_1 - F_2$).
3. A man stands still on a level floor. What forces act on him? Draw a free body diagram (FBD) to show all forces acting on him. (AS5)
Answer: The forces acting on a man standing still on a level floor are: (1) Gravitational force (weight $W$) acting vertically downwards, and (2) Normal force ($N$) acting vertically upwards from the floor. Since he is at rest, $N = W$ and the net force is zero.
4. The surface area of an object is $20\text{ m}^2$ and a force of $10\text{ N}$ is applied on it, then what is the pressure? (AS7)
Answer:
$\text{Force} (F) = 10\text{ N}$, $\text{Area} (A) = 20\text{ m}^2$.
$\text{Pressure} = \frac{\text{Force}}{\text{Area}} = \frac{10}{20} = 0.5\text{ N/m}^2$ (Pascals).
5. How do you appreciate the role of friction in facilitating our various activities? (AS6)
Answer: Friction is vital in daily life. Without friction, we cannot walk, run, hold a pen, write on a blackboard, drive cars with brakes, or construct buildings. It provides the necessary grip for all motions.
6. Identify and draw all forces acting on the body shown in the diagram. (AS5)
Answer: The forces generally include gravitational weight ($W$ downwards), normal reaction ($N$ upwards), applied force ($F$), and opposing friction ($f$).
Higher Order Thinking Questions
1. If you push a heavy box which is at rest, you must exert some force to start its motion. However once the box is sliding you apply a lesser force to maintain that motion. Why? (AS1)
Answer: Static friction (which resists motion from rest) has a maximum limit that is higher than sliding friction. Once the box starts sliding, sliding friction comes into play, which is lesser than maximum static friction, requiring less force to maintain motion.
2. How do you increase the pressure by keeping (a) area unchanged (b) force unchanged? (AS1)
Answer:
(a) If area is unchanged, increase the applied force.
(b) If force is unchanged, decrease the surface area of contact.
3. Imagine that friction disappeared from the earth. What will happen? Explain. (AS2)
Answer: If friction disappeared, we could not walk or run without slipping, cars could not stop or start, writing with a pen or chalk would be impossible, and no buildings could be constructed.
Chapter 2: Friction (ఘర్షణ)
1. Introduction to Friction
Friction is the opposing force that comes into play when one body moves or tends to move over the surface of another body. It acts parallel to the surfaces in contact and opposite to the direction of motion.
2. Types of Friction
Friction is categorized into static friction, sliding friction, rolling friction, and fluid friction (drag).

Chapter 2: Complete "Improve Your Learning" Exercises & Solutions
Reflections on Concepts
1. Explain the types of friction with suitable examples? (AS1)
Answer:
1. Static Friction: Comes into play when we try to move an object at rest relative to another surface (e.g., initial push on a heavy box).
2. Sliding Friction: Comes into play when an object is sliding over another surface (e.g., a book sliding on a floor).
3. Rolling Friction: Friction offered when one body rolls over another surface (e.g., suitcase with rollers).
4. Fluid Friction: Frictional force exerted by fluids (liquids and gases) on objects moving through them, also called drag (e.g., aeroplanes or birds moving through air).
2. A book placed on the surface of a table. The book is pushed in one direction. Draw the forces acting on the book and explain. (AS5)
Answer: When a book is pushed on a table, the forces acting on it are: (1) Weight ($W$) acting vertically downwards due to gravity, (2) Normal force ($N$) acting vertically upwards from the table, (3) Push force ($V$) in the horizontal direction, and (4) Frictional force ($f$) acting horizontally opposite to the motion.
3. Give few examples for Sliding friction. (AS1)
Answer:
1. A book sliding across a wooden table.
2. A child sliding down a plastic slide in a playground.
3. A drawer sliding out of a cabinet.
4. Explain how does lubrication reduces friction. (AS1)
Answer: When lubricants like oil or grease are applied between moving parts of machines, they form a thin layer. This prevents direct contact between surface irregularities, avoiding interlocking and making movement smooth.
5. Explain with one example that Frictional force is proportional to the Normal force? (AS1)
Answer: When we keep a single brick on the floor and pull it with a spring balance, we note a certain frictional force. When we add another brick on top of it, the normal force (pressing force) doubles, and we observe that the measured frictional force also increases correspondingly, proving friction is proportional to normal force.
Application of Concepts
1. Explain why do sportsmen use shoes with spikes? (AS1)
Answer: Sportsmen use shoes with spikes because spikes increase the friction between the shoes and the ground, providing a better grip and preventing athletes from slipping while running or playing.
2. Would it be easier or difficult for you to walk on a marble floor with soapy water. Why? (AS1)
Answer: It would be very difficult because soapy water acts like a lubricant, making the marble floor extremely smooth and drastically reducing friction, causing our feet to slip.
3. What happens if we do not reduce friction in machines? (AS2)
Answer: If friction is not reduced in machines, it causes excessive wear and tear of moving parts, overheating, wastage of energy, and eventually leads to machine breakdown.
4. What purposes are served by using ball bearings in machines? Explain with daily life situations. (AS1)
Answer: Ball bearings convert sliding friction into rolling friction, which is much smaller, thereby reducing energy loss and wear. Daily life example: Used in ceiling fans, bicycle wheels, and motor vehicle axles for smooth rotation.
5. Draw a free body diagram (FBD) to show various forces acting on a body which is sliding on an inclined plane. (AS5)
Answer: The forces acting on a body sliding down an inclined plane are: (1) Gravitational weight ($W$ acting vertically down), (2) Normal reaction ($N$ perpendicular to the inclined surface), and (3) Frictional force ($f$ acting parallel up the incline opposing the motion).
Higher Order Thinking Questions
1. Do you agree with the statement "friction is both good and evil." Explain with examples. (AS1)
Answer: Yes, friction is necessary for walking and writing (good/friend), but it causes wear and tear in machines and wastage of energy (evil/foe).
2. Reducing friction to the lowest possible level in machine tools solves the problem of energy crisis and conserve biodiversity. How do you support the statement? Explain? (AS1)
Answer: By minimizing friction, energy losses are reduced, saving fuel and electricity (solving energy crisis). This reduces pollution and preserves natural habitats, thereby conserving biodiversity.
