Chapter 9: What is Inside the Atom?

Class 9 Physical Science | SCERT Telangana Syllabus (Pages 150 - 165)

Pages 150 - 152

Introduction and Sub-atomic Particles

English: In previous chapters we have learnt that all matter is made up of atoms. The first modern atomic theory was proposed by John Dalton. According to Dalton, atoms were indivisible. However, discoveries like Michael Faraday's electrolysis experiments and sub-atomic particles (electrons, protons, and neutrons) proved that atoms are divisible.

తెలుగు వివరణ (Telugu Description):

An atom consists of a central nucleus surrounded by electrons. (పరమాణువు కేంద్రంలో కేంద్రకం ఉండి, దాని చుట్టూ ఎలక్ట్రాన్లు ఉంటాయి.)

Pages 152 - 156

Atomic Models: Thomson, Rutherford, and Bohr

English: To understand the structure of an atom, scientists developed various models. J.J. Thomson proposed the plum-pudding/watermelon model. Later, Ernest Rutherford's alpha-particle scattering experiment led to the discovery of the dense positive nucleus. Niels Bohr modified it by introducing discrete energy levels (shells) where electrons revolve without radiating energy.

తెలుగు వివరణ (Telugu Description):

Example / ఉదాహరణ: Bohr's model resembles planetary orbits around the sun. (బోర్ నమూనా సూర్యుని చుట్టూ తిరిగే గ్రహాల కక్ష్యలను పోలి ఉంటుంది.)

Distribution of Electrons in Orbits and Valency

English: Bohr and Bury proposed rules for electron distribution using the formula 2n² for maximum capacity in shells (K, L, M, N...). The electrons in the outermost shell are valence electrons, determining the valency or combining capacity of an element to achieve a stable octet.

తెలుగు వివరణ (Telugu Description):

Carbon has 4 valence electrons, giving it a valency of 4. (కార్బన్‌కు 4 వేలెన్స్ ఎలక్ట్రాన్లు ఉంటాయి, కాబట్టి దాని వాలెన్సీ 4.)

Pages 161 - 163

Atomic Number, Mass Number, and Isotopes

English: Atomic number (Z) is the number of protons in a nucleus. Atomic mass number (A) is the sum of protons and neutrons (A = Z + N). Isotopes are atoms of the same element having the same atomic number but different mass numbers due to varying neutron counts.

తెలుగు వివరణ (Telugu Description):

Answer: Neutral chlorine (Z = 17) has configuration 2, 8, 7. By gaining 1 electron to form Cl-, it gets 18 electrons (2, 8, 8), completely filling K (2), L (8), and M (8) shells.
తెలుగు వివరణ: తటస్థ క్లోరిన్ (Z = 17) విన్యాసం 2, 8, 7. ఇది ఒక ఎలక్ట్రాన్‌ను స్వీకరించి Cl- గా మారినప్పుడు 18 ఎలక్ట్రాన్లు (2, 8, 8) ఏర్పడి K, L, M కక్ష్యలు పూర్తిగా నిండుతాయి.

2. Explain the efforts made by scientists to explain the structure of atom by developing various atomic models? (AS6)

తెలుగు: వివిధ పరమాణు నమూనాలను అభివృద్ధి చేయడం ద్వారా పరమాణు నిర్మాణాన్ని వివరించడానికి శాస్త్రవేత్తలు చేసిన ప్రయత్నాలను వివరించండి.

Answer: Scientists progressed from Dalton's indivisible atom to Thomson's plum pudding model, Rutherford's nuclear planetary model based on alpha scattering, and finally to Bohr's discrete energy level model.
