Class 8 Physical Sciences SCERT Chapter 8: Pages 107 to 116 with bilingual summaries & tables.

📄 Page 107: Introduction, Combustion & Activity-1 (Combustible Materials) Class 8 SCERT Chapter 8
English Text (107.1):

We use various fuels (wood, coal, cow dung, kerosene, LPG) for domestic and industrial cooking. Candles or kerosene lamps provide light during power outages.

Activity-1: Testing various materials (paper, charcoal, magnesium ribbon, wood, cloth, pebbles, water) to determine which burn and which do not. A chemical process in which a substance reacts with oxygen to generate heat is called combustion.

📄 Page 108: Combustible vs. Non-Combustible & Activity-2 (Tumbler Test) Air Necessity for Burning
English Text (108.1):

Materials that burn are combustible (paper, petrol, wood); those that do not burn are non-combustible (pebbles, water, glass).

Activity-2: Placing an inverted glass tumbler over a burning candle cuts off air supply; the candle flickers and the flame goes off, proving that air is required for combustion.

📄 Page 109: Lab Activity - Proving Oxygen Helps in Burning (KMnO4) Incense Stick & Potassium Permanganate
English Text (109.1):

Lab Activity: Heating potassium permanganate ($KMnO_4$) in a test tube releases oxygen gas. When a glowing incense stick (agarbatti) stub is inserted into the test tube, it bursts into a bright flame, demonstrating that oxygen actively supports combustion.

📄 Page 110: Ignition Temperature & Activity-3 (Sun Rays & Paper) Magnifying Lens Focus
English Text (110.1):

Ignition Temperature: The lowest temperature at which a substance catches fire. Different substances have different ignition temperatures.

Activity-3: Focusing sun rays with a magnifying lens onto a piece of paper quickly raises its temperature to its ignition point, causing it to burn.

📄 Page 111: Inflammable Substances, Activity-4 (Paper Cup) & Safety Matches Water in Paper Vessel
English Text (111.1):

Inflammable Substances: Materials with very low ignition temperature that catch fire easily (petrol, alcohol, LPG).

Activity-4 (Paper Cup): Heating a paper cup filled with water does not burn the paper because heat is transferred to water, keeping paper below its ignition point.

📄 Page 112: Types of Combustion (Rapid, Spontaneous, Explosion) & Table 2 Fuels Classification
English Text (112.1):
  1. Rapid Combustion: Gas burns rapidly with heat and light (LPG stove, spirit).
  2. Spontaneous Combustion: Material bursts into flames without external spark (forest dry grass fire, phosphorus ignition).
  3. Explosion: Sudden reaction with heat, light, sound, and gas (fireworks, crackers).
📄 Page 113: Calorific Value Table & Fire Control Principles Hydrogen Calorific Value (150,000 kJ/kg)
English Text (113.1):

Calorific Value: The amount of heat energy produced on complete combustion of 1 kg of a fuel (measured in kJ/kg). Hydrogen has the highest calorific value (150,000 kJ/kg).

Fire Control: Eliminating any of the three factors (fuel, oxygen supply, high temperature) extinguishes fire.

📄 Page 114: Fire Extinguishers (Water & Carbon Dioxide $CO_2$) & Activity-5 Why Water Fails on Oil/Electrical Fires
English Text (114.1):

Water cools fires below ignition temperature, but cannot be used for electrical fires (conducts electricity) or oil/petrol fires (water sinks, oil floats and keeps burning).

Carbon Dioxide ($CO_2$): Best for electrical and oil fires because it is heavier than oxygen, blankets the fire, and lowers temperature.

📄 Page 115: Structure of a Flame (Zones) & Activity-6 & 7 Fig-7 (Dark, Luminous, Non-Luminous Zones)
English Text (115.1):

A candle flame has three main zones:

  1. Dark Zone (Innermost): Least hot, unburnt wax vapors.
  2. Luminous Zone (Middle): Moderately hot, yellow, incomplete combustion with carbon soot deposition.
  3. Non-Luminous Zone (Outermost): Hottest part, blue color, complete combustion due to rich oxygen supply.

I. Reflections on Concepts (భావనలపై ప్రతిస్పందనలు - Page 116)

Reflections on Concepts - Q1 (AS1)
Q1: Give four examples of combustible materials. (AS1)

Answer (English): Four examples of combustible materials (materials that catch fire easily and burn) are:
  1. Paper
  2. Wood
  3. LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas)
  4. Petrol
(Paper)
(Wood)
(Petrol)
Reflections on Concepts - Q2 (AS1)
Q2: Why should not we store spirit or petrol near our living place? (AS1)

Answer (English): Spirit and petrol are inflammable substances with extremely low ignition temperatures. They evaporate rapidly at room temperature and release inflammable vapours. Even a tiny spark or accidental flame nearby can instantly ignite these vapours, causing catastrophic fires and explosions. Hence, storing them near living quarters is extremely dangerous.
Reflections on Concepts - Q3 (AS2)
Q3: The oil fires should not be sprayed with water. Why? (AS2)

Answer (English): Water is heavier than oil. When sprayed on an oil or petrol fire, water sinks straight to the bottom while the burning oil floats on top and continues to burn. Furthermore, water may splatter the burning oil droplets, causing the fire to spread rapidly. Therefore, carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) or foam extinguishers must be used instead.
Reflections on Concepts - Q4 (AS1)
Q4: Water is not used to control fires involving electrical equipment. Why? (AS1)

Answer (English): Ordinary tap water contains dissolved salts and minerals, making it a good conductor of electricity. If water is sprayed onto live electrical equipment on fire, it can conduct electric current back to the person trying to douse the fire, resulting in a fatal electric shock. Hence, non-conducting $CO_2$ extinguishers are required.

II. Application of Concepts (భావనల అనువర్తనం - Page 116)

Application of Concepts - Q1 (AS1)
Q1: What precautions are to be taken while pouring water on fire? (AS1)

Answer (English): Precautions before pouring water on fire:
  • Ensure the fire is not caused by electricity (turn off electric mains first).
  • Ensure the fire is not fueled by oil, petrol, or grease (where water causes spreading).
  • Use water primarily for ordinary combustible solids like wood, paper, and cloth.
Application of Concepts - Q2 (AS1)
Q2: Give an example of a good fuel. How do you choose that fuel? Explain. (AS1)

Answer (English): LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is an example of a good domestic fuel. Criteria for choosing a good fuel:
  • High calorific value (produces large amount of heat).
  • Easy availability and reasonable cost.
  • Easy to store and transport safely.
  • Burns smoothly at a moderate rate without leaving harmful smoke or ash (low pollution).
Application of Concepts - Q3 (AS2)
Q3: It is difficult to burn a heap of green leaves but not a heap of dry leaves. Explain why? (AS2)

Answer (English): Green leaves contain a large amount of moisture (water). When heat is applied, a significant portion of thermal energy is consumed in evaporating this water content, preventing the leaves from reaching their ignition temperature. In contrast, dry leaves contain no moisture, so they attain their low ignition point almost instantly and catch fire easily.
Application of Concepts - Q4 (AS7)
Q4: Where do you find spontaneous combustion and rapid combustion in your daily life? (AS7)

Answer (English):
  • Spontaneous Combustion: Forest fires breaking out spontaneously in dry summer grass due to intense heat; phosphorus catching fire on its own when exposed to air at room temperature.
  • Rapid Combustion: LPG burning instantly when a match is brought near the gas stove knob; spirit or petrol burning rapidly upon receiving a tiny spark.

III. Higher Order Thinking Questions (HOTs - Page 116)

HOTs - Q1 (AS1)
Q1: Why is phosphorus preserved in water? (AS1)

Answer (English): White phosphorus has an extremely low ignition temperature (around $30^\circ ext{C}$). If kept exposed to air at room temperature, it catches fire spontaneously. To prevent direct contact with atmospheric oxygen and avoid accidental fires, white phosphorus is always immersed and stored under water.
HOTs - Q2 (AS7)
Q2: How do you feel about “Fuels have become a part of human life”? (AS7)

Answer (English): It is an absolute truth. From cooking food at home using LPG to driving cars, running factory machinery, generating electricity, and flying aircraft, fuels drive every single sector of modern civilization. Without fuels, human mobility, industry, and technology would come to a standstill. However, because fossil fuels cause pollution and are exhaustible, we must transition to clean, sustainable alternative fuels.

Apparatus: Two paper cups, water, tripod stand, spirit lamp or candle.

Procedure: 1. Take an empty paper cup and heat it directly over a candle flame; it burns instantly.
2. Take a second paper cup, pour water into it, and heat it over the candle flame.

Observation: The paper cup filled with water does not catch fire; instead, the water inside gets warm and eventually boils. Heat supplied to the paper is continuously conducted to the water, keeping the paper temperature below its ignition point.

Conclusion: A substance will not burn unless its ignition temperature is reached.

Scientific Exploration Feature

The Chemistry of Flames & Thermal Efficiency

English Scientific Insight:

A flame is created only when vaporized fuels undergo combustion. Non-gaseous solids like charcoal do not vaporize and hence burn without a flame (surface glowing only).

The outermost non-luminous zone of a candle flame is the hottest because atmospheric oxygen is most abundant there, facilitating complete oxidation. Goldsmiths specifically use this blue zone with a blowpipe for melting gold and silver due to its extreme thermal intensity.
