IS MATTER PURE?

Page 83-84

1. Introduction & What is Pure?

English: In daily life, 'pure' means no adulteration. In chemistry, a pure substance means a single form of matter where all constituent particles have the same chemical nature and fixed composition.

Activity 1: Is Full Cream Pure? /

English: Churning milk separates paste-like solid cream, which contains more than one component, proving it is a mixture. Centrifugation is used commercially and in labs (blood/urine tests) to separate heavier and lighter particles.

2. Types of Mixtures & Solutions

English: Mixtures are classified into Homogeneous (uniform composition throughout, e.g., saltwater, lemonade, air) and Heterogeneous (non-uniform composition, e.g., oil and water). A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances comprising a solute and a solvent.

Concentration & Solubility /

English: The amount of solute present in a saturated solution at a certain temperature is its solubility. Mass percentage = (Mass of solute / Mass of solution) × 100.
Page 90-95

3. Separating Components of Mixtures

English: Various techniques include Sublimation (ammonium chloride from salt), Evaporation (dye from ink), Paper Chromatography (separating colored components), Separating Funnel (immiscible liquids like oil and water), Simple & Fractional Distillation (miscible liquids), and Fractional Distillation of liquid air to obtain gases.
Page 95-97

4. Pure Substances: Elements & Compounds

English: Pure substances are categorized into Elements (cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical reactions, e.g., copper, oxygen) and Compounds (two or more elements combined chemically in a fixed proportion, e.g., water, copper sulphate).

I. Reflections on Concepts (అవగాహన - ప్రతిబింబాలు)

Q1. Which separation techniques will you apply for the separation of the following?
(a) Sodium chloride from its solution in water: Evaporation or Crystallization.

(b) Ammonium chloride from a mixture containing sodium chloride and ammonium chloride: Sublimation.

(c) Mixture of oil and water: Separating Funnel.

(d) Fine mud particles suspended in water: Filtration (or Sedimentation and Decantation).
Q2. Explain the following giving examples:
(a) Saturated solution (సంతృప్త ద్రావణం): A solution in which no more solute can dissolve at a specific temperature.

(b) Pure substance (విశుద్ధ పదార్థం): Matter that has a fixed chemical composition and consists of a single type of constituent particles.
(Distilled water).

(c) Colloid (కొలాయిడ్): A heterogeneous mixture in which the particle size is too small to be seen with naked eyes, but big enough to scatter a beam of light.

(d) Suspension (అవలంబనం): A heterogeneous mixture in which solid particles do not dissolve and remain suspended visibly.

II. Application of Concepts (సందర్భోచిత అనువర్తనాలు)

Q1. Determine the mass by mass percentage concentration of a 100g salt solution which contains 20g salt?
Solution & Explanation:
Mass of solute (salt) = 20g
Mass of solution = 100g
Mass percentage = (Mass of solute / Mass of solution) × 100
= (20 / 100) × 100 = 20%.
Q2. Calculate the concentration in terms of mass by volume percentage of the solution containing 2.5g potassium chloride in 50ml of potassium chloride (KCl) solution?
Solution & Explanation:
Mass of solute = 2.5g
Volume of solution = 50ml
Mass by volume percentage = (Mass of solute / Volume of solution) × 100
= (2.5 / 50) × 100 = 5%.
Q3. Classify the following substances in the given table:
(Ink, soda water, brass, fog, blood, aerosol sprays, fruit salad, black coffee, oil and water, boot polish, air, nail polish, starch solution, milk)
Solution (ద్రావణం) Suspension (అవలంబనం) Colloidal dispersion (కొలాయిడ్ విక్షేపణం)
Soda water, Black coffee, Air Fruit salad, Oil and water Ink, Brass, Fog, Blood, Aerosol sprays, Boot polish, Nail polish, Starch solution, Milk

III. Higher Order Thinking Questions (ఉన్నత స్థాయి ఆలోచనా ప్రశ్నలు)

Q1. How would you confirm that a colourless liquid given to you is pure water?
Answer & Explanation: To confirm if a colourless liquid is pure water, check its physical constants: 1. Pure water boils strictly at 100°C under normal atmospheric pressure. 2. It freezes at 0°C. 3. Its density is 1 g/cm³ at 4°C, and its refractive index is 1.33. If these parameters match, the water is pure.
Q2. Write the steps you would use for making tea. Use the words: Solution, solvent, solute, dissolve, soluble, insoluble, filtrate and residue.
Steps & Explanation: 1. Take water in a vessel, which acts as the solvent (ద్రావణి). 2. Add sugar and tea powder. Sugar is soluble (కరిగేది) and will dissolve (కరుగుతుంది) completely to form a sweet solution (ద్రావణం). 3. Tea leaves are insoluble (కరగనిది) in water. 4. After boiling, strain the liquid using a strainer. The liquid tea collected in the cup is the filtrate (ఫిల్ట్రేట్/తేట), and the leftover solid tea leaves on the strainer form the residue (అవశేషం).
