Chapter 12: Sound

Class 9 Physical Science | SCERT Telangana Syllabus (Pages 210 - 230)

Pages 210 - 214

Introduction, Production and Propagation of Sound

English: Sound is a form of mechanical energy produced by vibrating bodies. It travels through a medium in the form of longitudinal waves consisting of compressions (regions of high density and pressure) and rarefactions (regions of low density and pressure).

(Telugu Description):

A vibrating tuning fork produces sound waves that travel through air to reach our ears.

Characteristics of Sound Waves and Musical Sound

English: Sound waves are characterized by wavelength (lambda), amplitude (A), frequency (nu), and wave speed (v), related by the equation v = nu * lambda. Musical sounds have three main characteristics: pitch (depending on frequency), loudness (depending on amplitude), and quality (depending on waveform).

(Telugu Description):

A mosquito has a shrill voice due to high frequency, while a lion's roar has low frequency.

3. How do echoes in a normal room affect the quality of the sounds that we hear? (AS7)

Answer: In a normal furnished room, reflections are absorbed by walls and furniture, preventing harsh echoes. In an empty room, multiple quick reflections cause reverberation, making speech unclear and blurred.
