Chapter 11: Heat

Class 9 Physical Science | SCERT Telangana Syllabus (Pages 191 - 209)

Pages 191 - 193

Introduction, Heat, and Temperature

English: 'Hot' and 'cold' are relative terms. Heat is a form of energy in transit that flows from a body at higher temperature to a body at lower temperature. Temperature is a measure of thermal equilibrium and the degree of hotness or coldness. When two bodies are in thermal contact, heat flows until they attain thermal equilibrium.

(Telugu Description):

A metal piece feels colder than wood from a fridge because more heat flows out of your hand into the metal.

Specific Heat Capacity and Method of Mixtures

English: The specific heat of a substance is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of unit mass of the substance by one unit. It is denoted by 's' with the formula Q = msΔT. Water has a very high specific heat, which helps moderate climates and stabilize Earth's atmospheric temperature. The principle of the method of mixtures states that net heat lost by hot bodies equals net heat gained by cold bodies in thermal contact.

(Telugu Description):

Oceans act as heat storehouses because water absorbs large amounts of heat without a drastic temperature rise.

Evaporation, Condensation, Boiling, and Melting

English: Evaporation is the escaping of molecules from the surface of a liquid at any temperature, causing a cooling effect. Condensation is the phase change from gas to liquid, which is a warming process. Boiling occurs at a definite constant temperature called the boiling point, using latent heat of vaporization. Melting and freezing involve latent heat of fusion.

(Telugu Description):

Answer: When warm air surrounding the bottle comes in contact with the cold surface of the bottle, the water vapour in the air loses kinetic energy and undergoes condensation into tiny water droplets (dew).

Answer: Water in the dish will evaporate faster because a dish has a larger surface area exposed to air, and evaporation is a surface phenomenon.

6. Why is specific heat different for different substances? Explain. (AS1)

Answer: The bathroom air is humid with water vapour. When these vapour molecules condense on your skin, they release latent heat of vaporization, making you feel warm.

II. Application of Concepts (అవుసరాల అన్వయం)

1. Using the concept of evaporation, explain why dogs pant during hot summer days? (AS1)

Answer: Dogs do not sweat all over their body. They pant to pass air over moist surfaces of their tongue and respiratory tract, causing rapid evaporation that cools their body.

2. If 50g of water at 20°C and 50g of water at 40°C are mixed, what is the final temperature of the mixture? (AS1)

Solution: Using mixture principle (m₁(T₁ - T) = m₂(T - T₂)) with m₁ = m₂ = 50 g, T₁ = 40°C, T₂ = 20°C. T = (20 + 40) / 2 = 30°C.

3. What do you observe in the surroundings in terms of cooling or heating when water vapour is getting condensed? (AS1)

Answer: Condensation is a warming process, so it releases heat into the surrounding atmosphere, causing a slight warming effect.

4. Convert the following into Kelvin scale: (i) 20°C, (ii) 27°C, (iii) -273°C. (AS1)

Solution: Formula: K = 273 + T.
(i) 20°C = 273 + 20 = 293 K.
(ii) 27°C = 273 + 27 = 300 K.
(iii) -273°C = 273 - 273 = 0 K.

III. Higher Order Thinking Questions (ఉన్నత స్థాయి ఆలోచనా ప్రశ్నలు)

1. How do you appreciate the role of the higher specific heat of water in stabilizing atmospheric temperature during winter and summer seasons? (AS6)

Answer: Water's high specific heat allows oceans and water bodies to absorb huge amounts of heat without drastic temperature spikes in summer, and release stored heat slowly in winter, stabilizing global climate.

2. Answer these energy transfer questions: (a) 1 g boiling water at 100°C condenses to water at 100°C? (b) 1 g boiling water at 100°C cools to 0°C? (c) 1 g water at 0°C freezes to ice at 0°C? (d) 1 g steam at 100°C cools to ice at 0°C? (AS1)

Solution:
(a) Energy released = 540 cal (latent heat of vaporization).
(b) Energy released = 100 cal (msΔT = 1 × 1 × 100).
(c) Energy released = 80 cal (latent heat of fusion).
(d) Total energy released = 540 + 100 + 80 = 720 cal.

3. Suppose that 1 L of water is heated for a certain time to rise its temperature by 2°C. If 2 L of water is heated for the same time, how much would its temperature rise? (AS7)

Answer: Since mass is doubled, for the same heat supplied, the temperature rise will be halved, i.e., 1°C.
